Sage On A Throne, Gilded Wood, China, Qing Dynasty, 19th Century.
Gilded and polychrome wood statuette. It depicts an elderly man with a gray beard and moustache, seated on a throne (armchair) with a backrest. The figure is dressed in a traditional wide-sleeved robe, originally gilded. His right hand is clenched (probably originally holding an attribute such as a brush or cane), while his left rests flat on his knee. Four Chinese characters are visible on the figure's back: 「開垔師爺」 (Kāi yīn shī yé). Shiye (師爺) is an honorific term meaning "Master" or "Teacher", often used to designate protective deities or deified ancestors who, during their lifetime, were scholars or officials.
