Buddha Maravijaya On Throne, Konbaung Period
Large carved wooden Maravijaya Buddha, burgundy lacquer and gilding. Burma (Myanmar), Shan princely states, late 18th century, Konbaung period (1752–1885). The Shan princely states of this period produced works outside the strict mandalayic canon: more restrained facial treatment, less stylized eyebrows, and volumes still inherited from Ava. The treatment of the throne in this sculpture clearly belongs to the Konbaung period, but the vocabulary, particularly of the face, is still imbued with Ava's style. Inscriptions of the donors on the upper face of the throne. Provenance: Claude de Marteau Collection. Sold with certificate of provenance. H 75 cm x W 20 cm x D 29 cm.
