"Ataoro Ancestral Couple, East Timor"
An Ataoro couple, each standing in a typical stiff posture, very slightly leaning forward with their angular shoulders and stylized limbs. The female figure wears a comb at the back of her head and the male a traditional headdress, very slightly reddish brown patina. These figures can represent protective ancestors, spirits or sometimes warriors. They were placed in front of houses or in the uma lulik, ritual or cult houses. East Timor, Atauro Island, early 20th century.
