Burmese image of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the gesture of calling the earth to witness his awakening and victory over Mara (Maravijaya). In the center of his forehead, the urna is represented by a stylized red unalome, a Buddhist spiritual symbol representing the path to awakening or enlightenment. It consists of a spiral (chaos/life), loops (obstacles/learning), and a straight line (clarity/peace), ending in a point: Enlightenment. Myanmar, Shan Princely States, early 19th century.
