Large Burmese Buddha (187cm)

The standing Buddha, carved in solid wood on its lotus base, Burma (Myanmar), Mandalay period, 19th century. The posture is natural, his serene face sketches a slight smile. The eyes are made of glass adding to the work a very present and realistic dimension. The expression of this image of Buddha is particularly penetrating. (See different shots of the face) The wood is lacquered and gilded, richly decorated with glass beads, the Awakened One holds his monastic robe (uttarasanga) in his left hand. He holds the fruit of the myrobalan in his right hand, an allusion to the healing power of Buddha. His robe shows a cracked wear (Stable) which is normal wear. Period restoration on the lotus (See photo) The hands are removable and are not currently fixed for ease of transport. Although it stands, this old statue of Buddha must be fixed to a wall or a base.
