Seated Girl, Amadeo Gennarelli (1881-1943), Art Deco, France, 1920s-1930s.
Artist: Amadeo Gennarelli (1881–1943)
This terracotta sculpture depicts a seated woman. She is seated, her legs bent at the knees, brought close to her torso. Her head rests heavily on her arms, which cross over her knees, forming a stable, geometric composition. The face is simplified, with soft features and closed eyes, suggesting sleep or deep reverie. The marked influence of the Art Deco style is visible in the synthetic approach to form, the smooth surfaces of the body and the stylized hairstyle (parallel, geometric grooves on the head evoking waves).
Art Deco, France, 1920s-1930s. Signed "A. Gennarelli".
Length 63 cm, height 35 cm, width 19 cm.
Relatively good condition, damage to base and right leg.
Amadeo Gennarelli (1881-1943) was one of the major sculptors of the Art Deco period, mainly associated with a refined representation of the female nude. Although born in Naples, he devoted his entire artistic life to Paris. He was characterized by a simplification of anatomical details in favor of fluid lines and geometric accents (e.g., hairstyles arranged in regular waves, simplified facial features). He produced sculptures in marble, bronze and terracotta. Gennarelli arrived in Paris around 1913 and exhibited his work at the Salon des Artistes Français.
