France, late 18th century. The figure, dressed in a voluminous coat with a broad fur trim, wears a wig with twisted locks and a loosely knotted "Steinkirk" cravat. The ensemble evokes the fashion of the late reign of Louis XIV. His individualized face and slightly averted gaze are rendered with great liveliness. This may be a retrospective portrait of a magistrate or a preparatory model. There are a few minor nicks and signs of wear; possible restoration to the base.
