Portrait Of A Member Of The Order Of Saint Michael - Charcoal Drawing, 1820
A man wearing the Order of Saint Michael – charcoal on paper – Second Empire period frame – dated 1820, with an epigram. Traces of dampness. We do not know the recipient of the Order. The Order, created in 1469, was suppressed in 1791 and re-established in 1816 by decree of Louis XVIII, who transformed it into a reward for scientific, artistic, and literary merit. It had one hundred members. Our figure is therefore a scientist, a man of letters, or an artist. The epigram: Endowed with an uncommon soul, Knight without reproach and charming troubadour, Always cheerful, always brave, one is constantly so, Modest in glory and great in misfortune.
