Youri Demeure (1927-2003)
Mixed media on panel 102 x 145 cm
Signed and dated 1992
Youri Demeure, painter, student of R. Guiette and at La Cambre (O. Jespers). Member of the Young Belgian Painting movement (1946). Participated in four of its exhibitions. Also participated in the Antwerp Young Painting exhibition (1947). Held his first solo exhibition in Brussels (Lou Cosyn Gallery) in 1947. Took scenography classes at La Cambre (1946-49, H. Closson). Winner of the Young Belgian Painting Prize in 1950. Poeticized everyday subjects. However, absorbed by other professional tasks, he abandoned painting for almost twenty years. He reappeared in the galleries in the mid-1970s, with compositions that were sometimes unsettling. His work then falls under the category of abstract materialism. Explores the sensations produced by kneading pictorial matter. (ARTO) Works in the Mons Museum
