The composition depicts a young reader absorbed in his book, leaning on a table covered with a rich tapestry and surrounded by volumes. The lighting, characteristic of Rembrandt, highlights the face and hands, while the rest of the scene remains in deep shadow.

The plate bears the following inscriptions:

• “Rembrandt pinxit” in the lower left corner;
• “W. Unger sculpsit” in the lower right corner.

Very fine print quality, with fine details and deep blacks.

Good overall condition. Wide margins.

Wilhelm Unger was one of the most important reproduction engravers of the second half of the 19th century. He devoted a significant portion of his work to interpreting Rembrandt’s paintings, which are sought after today for their remarkable technical quality.
