Achille Fouquier (1817-1895?) 24 “The halt at the oasis” pencil drawing enhanced with white stone on beige paper, signed with the stamp 31 X 49 cm, framed by a marie-louise stained 65 X 50 cm.Light redness, two vertical tears of 3 and 2 cm at the bottom in the middle. Circa 1853/54.
Men in burnoos and their horses rest in the shade of large trees while contemplating a camel caravan pass by a mountain range, a Corinthian capital in the foreground, recalling the classic past of these regions.
An indefatigable traveler, Achille Fouquier brought back sketches, anecdotes and observations from his many trips, collected in several books that were published. Whether from the Basque Country (he was mayor of Saint-Jean-de-Luz), Italy, Greece, the Balkans or the Middle East, his drawings taken from life are testimony to the history of these regions
