19th-century Grand Tour: “grand Warwick Vase”

Grand Tour19th century: “Grand Vase Warwick”: chiseled bronze, 24 × 27.5 × 34 cm.
Named after one of its first owners, this is an enormousmarble vase found in the ruins of Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli.
Its Dionysian decoration has been reinterpreted many times, with variations in height, taller, the number of heads, etc.
Our specimen, remarkable for its size and the quality of its deep chiseling, is one of these versions, featuring eight heads in relief on the body and a decoration of grapevines.
