Léon Lhermitte - The Crowns - 1887 - Ink Wash
Léon Lhermitte was aFrench naturalist painter famous for devoting his career to faithfully depicting rural life. Nicknamed the “painter of harvesters,” hedistinguished himself through his exceptional mastery of drawing, capturing the light in fields and interiors alike with striking realism.
His masterpiece, *The Harvesters’ Pay* (1882),perfectly embodies his style by illustrating the harshnessof daily labor and the dignity of the workers in his native Picardy.
Admired by his peers, notably by Vincent vanGogh, who saw him as an absolute master, he left behind anessential artistic and social record of 19th-century peasant life.
