"Juan Cardenas - Self-portrait Painting - Drawing - Black Chalk And Chalk"
Juan Cárdenas was born in Popayan, Colombia, in 1939. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design at the age of 23, he spent a few more years in the United States completing his military service. In 1965, Cárdenas returned to his native country, where his political cartoons landed him in prison. Once released, he was able to dedicate himself fully to his art and to teaching painting in Bogotá (School of Fine Arts, University of the Andes). The Colombian artist also lived in France in the 1980s; in Paris, he was championed by the gallery owner Claude Bernard, who held several exhibitions of his work. Juan Cárdenas primarily painted his own image throughout his career. Our drawing is no exception, depicting the artist at work, his left arm extended towards the canvas he is painting.
