19th Century French School - View Of Caudebec-en-caux - About 1830
French school of the 19th century
Notre-Dame de Barre-y-va
View of Caudebec-en-Caux taken from the heights of the faubourg Sainte Claire
Circa 1820-1840
Oil on canvas
33 x 49 cm.
Unquestionably the most picturesque and spectacular view of Caudebec-en-Caux, this vantage point from the suburbs overlooking the town to the Seine River attracted, before the Impressionists, the English and French painters who toured Normandy after Napoleon's defeat.
We also know of similar compositions engraved after works by John Gendall (1789-1865) or Louis Garneray (1787-1853). Although our work remains anonymous, it is reminiscent of paintings by the Caudebec artist Hippolyte Sebron (1801-1879), who was particularly fond of city views taken from the surrounding heights.
If you're looking for an engraving, you've come to the right place.
In the foreground, the Cauchois costume of the two female figures bears witness to the Restoration's renewed interest in traditional dress. Chroniclers of the period report that the red skirt was then worn by Catholics and the blue by Protestants.
