Virgin Mary Protecting Simon

Artist: Travail De Carmel
Touching work by Carme or Carmélite representing Notre Dame du Mont Carmel. Made with a pen on vellum partially enhanced with red, blue and gold gouache. The scene represents the Virgin Mary carrying the baby Jesus, surrounded by two angels and offering to a kneeling monk the Scapular (object of devotion made up of two small pieces of blessed material connected by cords). To his right a kneeling Carmelite, in the background a crowd of believers under the protection of his blue coat. At the bottom of the work is written in Latin in pen: Recipite hoc Sanctum Scapulare in quo quis moriens aeternum non patietur incendium. In the Catholic religion, it is a protection of mortals ensured by the Virgin Mary to escape hell; also called: indulgence Sabattine. The monk represents Simon Stock, Simon Stock is an English Carmelite from the 12th century. He was one of the first Generals of the order, and he remained one of the most famous. His great notoriety comes from a vision he would have had of the Virgin Mary giving him the scapular. He is revered as blessed in the Roman Catholic Church, and considered a saint in the Carmelite order. It is celebrated on May 16 or locally on July 17. This work is naively framed by a master key of cardboard. The 18th century style frame is in gilded stucco with a 19th century leaf, it has two splinters one (1 cm) on the inner border, the other in the bottom left corner (visible in the photos). the glass is old with some defects including some micro-scratches. I opened the whole in order to clean the inside of the glass, apply new small nails to fix the cardboard and check that it is indeed a drawing with a pen executed on vellum (extremely finer animal skin than parchment). Dimensions at sight: 13.5 cm X 11.5 cm. Delivery: 10 € for mainland France.
