Russian Icon Of Christ Pantocrator – Late 19th Century
A small Russian icon for private devotion depicting Christ Pantocrator, the Almighty. Christ is shown facing forward, his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing, holding the Book of the Gospels in his left hand.
The wooden panel is covered with a brass-colored metal overlay, called an oklad or riza, decorated with floral and geometric motifs in relief. A large, radiant halo surrounds the face. The letters on the nimbus mean “He Who Is”; the inscription in Church Slavonic, in the lower cartouche, identifies Christ as the Almighty.
Russia, likely from the late 19th century. Shows signs of age and wear, including wear and tear, distortions, and small tears in the metal covering. On the reverse, a recessed wooden reinforcement bar and a hanging ring.
