Antique Russian Icon The Twelve Feasts Tempera On Board XIX Century
Tempera on wood.
This large icon depicts Saint Caralampus at its center, a bishop of a city in Asia Minor in the 3rd century A.D. who died a martyr.
Surrounding the figure of the saint, twelve panels depict episodes from his life, particularly his martyrdom, which—according to legend—was prolonged and involved repeated tortures, due to God’s intervention to save the saint each time and the conversions he was able to bring about among his tormentors.
The panel shows minor flaking of paint and some dirt stains.
