Gunner's Arch-sling
A 17th-century brass archipenzolo, an example of scientific and military instrumentation from the Baroque period. It features a compass-like architectural structure consisting of two smooth, flat legs connected by a finely crafted round hinge. The legs are joined at the center by a horizontal, folding, graduated rod, engraved to allow for the calculation of angles of elevation. Designed for dual use, it was employed in both civilian and military contexts. Also known as an “archipenzolo da canzoniere,” it was an indispensable instrument for the artillery of the time; positioned directly on the breech of the cannon, it allowed gunners to calculate the elevation and angle of fire of the cannon.
