Katzbalger Two-handed Sword Of The Landsknechts
Two-Handed Katzbalger Sword of the Landsknechts.
These swords were used by the elite Landsknecht soldiers.
This is a composite piece: the blade is antique (probably from the 17th century), while the hilt dates from the 19th century. While fully period examples can fetch between 15,000 and 20,000 euros, this sword is a truly beautiful piece for any collector.
The hilt is in excellent condition; it consists of a guard with twisted “S”-shaped quillons, ending in brass or copper balls.
The grip is made of wood covered with leather; this leather is very old, although it is difficult to determine its exact age. The pommel is adorned with the same twisted motif.
The mount shows no play.
The blade is double-edged and features a fuller on each side.
It is marked on both sides with a motif depicting a wolf, accompanied by another unidentified mark, but similar examples might point to it coming from Passau.
The sword is well-balanced for two-handed use, but it is undeniably intended for an experienced user trained in the handling of this type of weapon. It is a truly remarkable piece.
Specifications:
Total length: 118 cm
Blade length: 92.5 cm
