Pair Of Charro Spurs, Mexico, 19th Century
These high-quality spurs are typically Mexican, and date from the 19th century. They are known as “espuelas Charras ,”meaning Charro spurs, the Charro being, in Mexico, the man on horseback, a skilled rider who is mindful of and proud of his appearance.
While at first this term applied mainly to cattle herders, by the mid-19th century, this “charreria” trend had become a source of national pride, displayed in clothing and equipment, even when the person wearing this equipment was from an urban rather than a rural background.
The stocky bows typicals of Mexican craftsmanship are made of iron decorated with engravings, including on the upper parts, and feature a chiseled silver plate on each side. Iron fastening buttons are present.
The collars that support the wheels are made of finely chiseled iron; they are attached to each bow by rivets.
The wheels are large; they are made ofopenwork and chiseled iron (8 cm in diameter)
The craftsmanship of these objects is above average, and their age is indisputable. They should find a prominent place in a collection related to horses.
