An Interesting 17th-century Marine Painting. Attributed To Monsù Montagna (ca. 1608–1660)

Artist: Matthieu Van Plattenberg Dit Monsù Montagna (anversa 1608-1660)
An interesting painting depicting a scene of a sailing ship wrecked at sea during a storm near a fortification perched on rocks. The painter who created it was an artist active in the mid-17th century, fascinated by the seascapes popularized by those dissident landscape painters, such as Salvador Rosa, Filippo Napolitano, and many others of Flemish-Dutch origin.

It is possible to link this work to the turbulent seascapes—often depicting shipwrecks—by the Flemish painter Matthieu Van Plattenberg, known as Monsù Montagna (Antwerp, 1608–1660); A quick review of his body of work reveals many coinciding references, such as the type of vessels with red flags, the same topographical characteristics of the settlements, and the atmospheres and proto-Romantic verve that characterize these scenes.

The painting is in excellent condition and features a contemporary gilded frame, finely engraved with floral scrolls, made in central Italy.
On the reverse side, there is a Verner stamp with a date. It would appear that these inscriptions were added after the painting was completed.
The dimensions are: 95 x 73 cm (canvas only); 117 x 95 cm including the frame.

A certificate of authenticity is included with the sale.
