Jan Jacobsz Van Der Croos 1654/55–1712 Ships At Sea, Large Painting, Seascape, Netherlands, Gibraltar

Artist: Jan Jacobsz Van Der Croos
Jan Jacobsz van der Croos
The Hague, 1654/55 – Amsterdam, 1712
Ships at Sea. The Strait of Gibraltar.
Painting, oil on canvas
Signed “Jan V Croos” on the floating panel at the lower right
Painting: 112.5 x 85 cm
Beautiful antique gilded wood frame, 18th-century England: 132.5 x 106.5 cm (warning large size)
Good condition, 19th-century relining, small, discreet restorations
On the back, a storage label reading “Mrs. Hamilton / No. 69” (circa 1900?)

Note 1: A similar painting is in the Royal Museum in Greenwich (“Shipping in the Bosphorus,” inv. BHC0844). It measures 64.5 x 83 cm (and is therefore smaller than ours) and features compositional variations (and is of inferior quality to ours).
Note 2: A larger painting (91 x 182 cm) appears to form a pair with ours (in terms of composition). It was sold by Sotheby’s on December 5, 2006, lot 351, for 15,000 pounds (22,280 euros). This same painting is listed in the RKD’s records as a landscape of the Strait of Gibraltar from 1704. It is as though the painter had created two compositions that served as pairs, and the patron could choose the size and details of the composition.
Note 3: An amusing detail is the caganer (someone pooping) on the boat on the right.
