Curule Armchair, 17th Century, William & Mary X-frame Chair With Its Footstool
Curule armchair, William & Mary X-frame chair with its footstool in lacquered beech
England, late 17th century, cut velvet upholstery
A seating set comprising an X-frame armchair and its matching rectangular footstool. English work, late 17th century. An architectural form derived from the curule seats of Antiquity (sella curulis), symbols of authority and power.
Frame probably in beech, covered with a thick old finish, varnished or brown lacquered ("japanning"), imitating precious woods. Uprights, armrests and legs with moulded, sinuous profiles. Feet joined by baluster-turned stretchers. The painted surface shows pronounced wear, crazing and flaking, bearing witness to the age of the piece.
Traditional upholstery mounted on crossed webbing, clearly visible beneath the seats. Covered in a rich cut velvet with a damask-style floral and foliate pattern, crimson tones on a bronze-green ground. The edges are finished with a wide braid with red fringes, held by upholstery nails.
The seats of the armchair and of the stool have central panels of plain red cloth, designed to take loose removable cushions covered in the same cut velvet. Exceptional state of preservation of the wooden structure: perfectly stable, sturdy frames, suitable for daily use. Regular wear to the textile, patina of time and slight scattered fraying.
Provenance: private collection of a British family settled in France.
