Gilded Bronze Watch Case Or Ring Holder – “chained Love” – Charles X Period
Gilded bronze watch holder or ring holder – Chained Cupid – Charles X period
A charming little gilded and patinated bronze watch holder from the Charles X period, depicting a winged Cupid with his wrists bound by a chain connecting him to a tree trunk. The finely chiseled and gilded cherub contrasts with the chocolate-brown patina of the tree and the circular base. A curved branch allows for hanging a pocket watch or holding a ring. This composition evokes the theme of “Captive Love,” a popular motif in the decorative arts of the early 19th century.
