Silver Wax Seal Featuring A Swan And Her Cygnets—austro-hungarian, 19th Century
Silver wax seal featuring a swan and her cygnets—Austro-Hungarian, 19th century
19th-century wax seal in the Austro-Hungarian tradition, made of richly crafted silver and adorned with turquoise and red stones (to be identified).
The handle depicts a swan with a long, curved neck and outstretched wings, surrounded by its cygnets, which it appears to be feeding. The entire piece rests on an openwork basket, accented by a frieze of small turquoise stones, and sits atop a base decorated with scrollwork and foliage.
The swan’s body and wings are also embellished with red stones and turquoises, whose colors contrast with the silver’s dark patina.
The matrix, quadrilobed in shape, is made of white hardstone. It is unmarked, with no engravings, initials, or coats of arms.
Silver tested with a touchstone by a jeweler. No hallmarks identified.
Condition: Preserved in its original patina, uncleaned. Traces of oxidation and signs of age. One stone is missing from one of the wings, as visible in the photographs.
