Round Lacquer Box By Martin With A Romantic Design – 18th Century
Round box in Martin varnish with a gallant scene – 18th century
A charming 18th-century round box, made of Martin lacquer, adorned with a gallant scene depicting a partially nude young woman holding an arrow, accompanied by a winged cupid and a dove. The composition evokes an allegory of Love.
The reverse features a wreath of roses and a quiver. The painted decorations on a green background are surrounded by a finely chased metal frame with a silvery appearance; no hallmark is visible. The interior is lined with a reddish-brown material with tortoiseshell-like hues.
Condition: The object has been preserved as found, without any cleaning or intervention on my part. Old cracks in the varnish, wear, and minor surface imperfections. A few cracks on the interior, with no visible chips. See photographs.
