Oval box in Martin lacquer with a dog motif on a red background – 18th century

A charming little 18th-century oval box in Martin lacquer, with a red background, decorated with a dog resting on a cushion next to a piece of furniture covered with fringed fabric. The scene, surrounded by a delicate floral border, evokes the fanciful designs and taste for compositions inspired by antiquity or the Orient that were popular in the 18th century.

The reverse features a small floral motif on a red background. The silver-plated metal frame is adorned with foliage and floral motifs. The interior features an antique mirror, surrounded by a guilloché decoration with radiating patterns.

Condition: The object has been preserved in its original condition, without cleaning or restoration by Mapart. The varnish has a beautiful craquelure, with wear and small chips along the edges. The edges are fragile and show small tears near the hinges. Open with care. The mirror’s silvering has discolored, a sign of its age. See photographs.
