Straw Marquetry Fly Box - 18th Century

Straw marquetry fly box – 18th century

Elegant small rectangular box decorated in straw marquetry. The lid features a figurative scene in a circular medallion, depicting two figures in a rural setting. The walls are decorated with a geometric pattern with vertical bands, while the interior is enhanced with a polychrome decoration of scrolls and foliage. Made of finely flattened, dyed and glued rye straw, this box illustrates the refinement and virtuosity of 18th century decorative work.
Some wear and small alterations from use, but good overall condition.
