Cameo Figuring Caracala
Oval cameo in two-tone chalcedony, carved in chestnut on a parma background, representing the bust of the Emperor Caracalla, wearing a radiate crown and draped in the paludamentum, the purple mantle of commanders-in-chief.
The radiate crown is composed of a knotted band, inherited from the Hellenistic dynasties — a symbol of royal power — and solar rays, which evoke the divine nature of the emperor, assimilated to Sol Invictus.
The Emperor Caracalla was depicted wearing this crown between 215 and 217. Marcus Aurelius Severus Antoninus Augustus, reign name of Lucius Septimius Bassianus, known as Caracalla (188–217).
Collection of Baron Eugène Henri Léonard BEYENS (1816 - 1894)
