ORDERING AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM OUR WEBSITE

This luxurious, large glass-cased mantel clock was crafted in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. It is signed on the dial and engraved on the movement plate “L. Leroy & Cie, 7, boulevard de la Madeleine, Paris”, bearing the serial number 19010. The clock carries the signature of the prestigious Parisian firm headed by Louis Leroy from 1889, whose activities are documented in Tardy’s Dictionary of Clockmakers. This piece exemplifies the expertise of French high-grade horology, combining architectural elegance, superior workmanship and a pursuit of chronometric precision.

Its architecture is built around an imposing gilt-bronze case, distinguished by restrained, rigorously structured lines. The carefully executed construction showcases four thick glass panels with bevelled edges. The robustly assembled frame features moulded vertical uprights, finely accentuated corners and gilt surrounds that subtly catch the light. The composition is crowned by a broad, projecting top with softened contours, resting on a cornice articulated with successive stepped mouldings. The generously proportioned base features tiered mouldings and shaped feet, providing the ensemble with a balanced visual foundation. Access to the movement is provided by a glazed front door, while a rear opening facilitates winding, adjustment and maintenance. The transparent panels fully reveal the mechanical components, contributing to the clock’s demonstrative and educational appeal.

The circular white enamel dial features a particularly sophisticated, two-level design. The outer chapter ring, marked by large black Roman numerals and a finely graduated minute track, surrounds a recessed centre highlighted by gilt-bronze rings. The blued-steel hands create an elegant contrast with the white enamel and the warm tones of the gilt-bronze case. At the centre, the Brocot escapement, complete with its adjustment components and agate clockmaking stones, provides a remarkable illustration of the pursuit of precision that characterised fine nineteenth-century horology. The visible arrangement of the escapement allows its mechanical design to be appreciated directly, giving the dial a technical interest that extends far beyond its timekeeping function. The ensemble reflects meticulous craftsmanship, in which legibility, material quality and elegant finishing are governed by the same exacting standards.

Suspended beneath the movement is a remarkable mercury-compensated pendulum, a characteristic feature of precision clocks designed to minimise the effects of temperature fluctuations. Its principle relies on the thermal expansion properties of mercury: as the temperature rises, the mercury moves within its reservoirs, partially compensating for the expansion of the pendulum rod. This thermal compensation is intended to preserve the pendulum’s effective length and reduce variations in timekeeping caused by changes in temperature. The suspension, metal columns and glass reservoirs form a mechanical assembly that is as instructive as it is visually appealing, highlighting the chronometric ambitions of this exceptional clock. Beyond its functional significance, this mechanism is one of the clock’s most visually captivating features, beautifully displayed behind the glazed panels.

With its generous proportions, restrained architecture and transparent case, this clock commands a remarkable decorative presence without relying on excessive ornamentation. Its richness lies precisely in the combination of gilt bronze, bevelled glass and exposed mechanics. Light passes through the case, accentuating the mouldings and animating the metallic surfaces, while the two-level dial and Brocot escapement naturally draw the eye. The visibility of the movement and mercury-compensated pendulum transforms the clock into an object of horological contemplation, combining monumental elegance with technical sophistication. Bearing the signature of a prestigious Parisian firm, this clock will appeal equally to enthusiasts of precision horology, collectors of fine clocks and admirers of decorative objects capable of defining the character of either a classical interior or a contemporary space.

Original movement, unaltered. Strikes the hours and half-hours on a gong, producing a clear and authentic sound.
