Pair Of Ram’s Head Vase Candlesticks
ORDERING AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM OUR WEBSITE
magnificent and exceptional pair of candlesticks from the Napoleon III period, circa 1860–1880, remarkable for the elegance of their composition, the richness of their ornamentation and the refined combination of grey turquin marble with finely chased and gilded bronze. Inspired by the decorative repertoire of Antiquity, these precious objects are distinguished by their spectacular mounts depicting ram’s heads, symbols of strength, power and fertility, lending the ensemble a particularly striking sculptural presence. The deep, subtly veined tones of the marble contrast beautifully with the warm lustre of the gilding, embodying the luxurious decorative spirit characteristic of the Second Empire’s decorative arts.
Each candlestick features an ovoid marble body, surmounted by a narrowed neck and a circular collar richly adorned with finely chased acanthus leaves. Four ram’s heads in gilt bronze, applied around the body, form the principal decorative feature of the composition. Their curling horns, intricately detailed fleece and powerful expressions demonstrate the exceptional care devoted to their modelling. Long, sinuous mounts, embellished with botanical motifs and beading, extend from the heads and elegantly support the marble body, forming a tripod base that is both stable and dynamic. The ensemble rests on a gilt-bronze base with flowing contours, accentuated by geometric mouldings. The flared candle sockets, adorned with guilloché friezes, complete this highly coherent decorative design, in which Neoclassical restraint combines with the sculptural richness characteristic of the Second Empire.
