Cumberworth Watch
Artist: Charles Cumberworth
This mid-19th-century table clock combines a marble and gilded bronze base with a dark-patinated bronze sculptural group designed by Charles Cumberworth. The piece is in the Egyptian Revival style and depicts a woman in traditional Egyptian clothing and headdress, seated on a pedestal covered with a lion’s skin. The female figure holds a small cup in her hand and is flanked by a youthful figure kneeling at her side.
The structure rests on an elliptical white marble base, finished with symmetrical gilded bronze appliqués that include plant motifs, winged busts at the ends, and an eagle-shaped frieze positioned in the lower central band. Set in the center of the marble base is a circular dial enamelled in white, framed by a metal bezel shaped like a coccordilli. The dial features Roman numerals.
