Royal Artillery Officer's Helmet
Box containing the two helmets of a Royal Artillery officer, models in use between1878 and 1902: the dress helmet and the service helmet.
The box is oval in shape. Its conical lid is fitted a handle at its top and a padlock. It is made of copper and painted with a sort of camouflage pattern. The owner’s name, “H.R.H. ROUQUETTE – Royal Artillery ”. Several shipping labels are affixed to the box, proving that these helmets accompanied this officer on his travels.
The dress helmet: it consists of a cork frame covered with dark blue cloth, assembled in four parts. The visor and the neck guard, which are stiffened, are also covered in blue cloth, with no visible seams. The visor is edged with a gold-plated metal band, while the neck guard is trimmed with patent leather.
A domed, gilded metal band reinforces the back of the helmet. A gilded chain chinstrap lined with blue velvet is attached on the sides to two gilded rosettes. At the top of the helmet, a gilded cross-shaped piece serves as the base for a gilded spike. In 1881, it was decided to replace the spike with a ball.
Attached to the front is a gilded plate bearing the royal coat of arms bearing the symbols of the artillery and the royal mottos “Honni soit qui mal y pense,” “Dieu et mon droit,” and “Ubique quo fas et gloria ducunt.”
The underside of the visors is covered with green leather. The interior of the helmet is lined with a fine unbleached canvas. The sweatband is made of beige leather. Its diameter is adjustable via a thin red cord. On the sweatband, an assignment tag bears the name of theowner.
The service helmet: this is the most classic colonial helmet, consisting of a cork shell covered with white canvas, assembled in sixpieces, topped with a ball.
The inside of the visors is lined with green canvas. The lining is made of black canvas.
These helmets are in very good condition. The dress helmet is in near-new condition. The service helmet shows signs of use. A few slight dents on the helmet shell bear witness to its many journeys.
