Circa 1860–1880
China, for export to Europe
Large wall hanging or curtain in sky-blue marbled silk satin with a hint of celadon, made in workshops in Canton, China, for export to Europe and dating from the Second Empire period. Polychrome silk embroidery in flat and backstitch, featuring shades of bamboo groves, chrysanthemums, and tree peonies, populated by pheasants and numerous birds. Lined with sky-blue silk pongé, hand-sewn along all four sides. The harmony of this wall hanging’s pastel colors is particularly striking. A few tiny, discreet stains are the only flaw worth noting. The satin is in good condition and has no holes or visible stains. Overall, the color and condition are good.
