Charles-Auguste EDELMANN (1879–1950) Series of five original prints – Portraits of Women
Etchings / drypoints on paper, signed and numbered
French School – 1920s–1930s SSL26EDE002
A series of five original prints by Charles-Auguste Edelmann, all signed “Ch. A. Edelmann” in pen or pencil and numbered (visible limited editions: 1/50, 2/150…).
The artist, bornin Soultz-sous-Forêts (Alsace) in 1879 and died in Paris in 1950, Charles-Auguste Edelmann was a French painter, draftsman, and illustrator. A student of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Ferdinand Humbert at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he began exhibiting as early as 1905 alongside Albert Marquet, Suzanne Valadon, and Maurice Utrillo. A member of the Salon d’Automne, he gained recognition for his scenes of modern Parisian life, his nudes, and his book illustrations (notably for Mornay Publishers).
His elegant, dynamic, and precise line makes him an excellent engraver. These prints perfectly illustrate his taste for the female silhouette of the Roaring Twenties: intimate nudes and elegant figures of the modern woman.
Description of the seriesAll plates feature generous margins and a distinct mark of a limited-edition lithogravure, with Edelmann’s characteristic linework, which is both precise and expressive.
In good overall condition. The paper is sound, with an “AROMAS” watermark; there are a few signs of wear and slight marginal soiling inherent to the age, without affecting the subject matter.
The prints are sold as is, unframed, ready to be displayed or mounted.
This series of five plates forms a cohesive and particularly appealing collection for enthusiasts of early 20th-century French engravings, the female figure, and illustrations from the Roaring Twenties.
Their intimate format, elegant subject matter, and limited, signed editions make this a collection that is both immediately decorative and fascinating.
