Traditional Southeast Asian knife golok, parang, Kris, Hulu Puntung – Indonesia / Malaysia – 19th century SCN25DAG003

A fine example of a utility knife and traditional bladed weapon from Southeast Asia, complete with its original sheath.

Single-edged, slightly curved blade made of forged steel, with a slightly reinforced spine and a tapered point.
The base of the blade features a characteristic slight step.
Dark wooden handle (probably ebony), with an ergonomic curved shape, ending in an openwork pommel carved with plant motifs and stylized scrolls.
Light-colored wooden scabbard (weathered), made from a single piece of wood, with a lower tip carved in the shape of a crook featuring a decorative scroll. The surface of the scabbard features decorative engravings.

  • Total length of the weapon (excluding the scabbard): 30 cm
  • Blade length: 18 cm

Good overall condition, showing signs of use.
The blade has a beautiful patina from age and slight traces of surface oxidation.
Wooden sheath and handle.
No restoration, in good original condition, no damage.

This knife, originating from the Indonesian archipelago and Malaysia (golok, parang, or regional variants), served both as an everyday tool (clearing brush, agricultural work) and as a weapon for personal defense.

Exemplars from the late 19th and early 20th centuries were often handcrafted by local blacksmiths, with handles and sheaths carved according to regional decorative traditions (botanical motifs, scrollwork, and sometimes zoomorphic designs).

They were frequently brought back to Europe by travelers, soldiers, or colonial administrators from the Dutch East Indies or British Malaya.
