Pyrogenic Inkwell With A Green Patina; Putto Drawing Water From A Well; 19th-century Marble Base; Ssl26enc001
Regule inkwell with green patina, depicting a putto drawing water from a well; late 19th-century marble base; SSL26ENC001
A charming desk inkwell or pyrogen made of regule with a beautiful green patina imitating bronze, in the style of small decorative bronze pieces from the late 19th century.
A chubby putto, leaning forward, turns the crank of a well whose lid—shaped like nailed planks—opens on a hinge to reveal the ink or tobacco (cigarettes) reservoir. At the base of the well, a wooden bucket with metal hoops rests next to the stone well curb, which is finely carved like the rest of the decoration: brickwork, grasses, and foliage. The bucket serves as a holder for feathers or matches...
Dual function: the piece was designed for dual use. Its open bucket can also hold matches, allowing it to be presented as a matchholder depending on the desired use.
Both uses are possible.
The piece rests on a green marble base with beveled edges, whose veining matches the patina of the regule.
Good condition, no damage. Beautiful, uniform, well-preserved patina of age imitating bronze.
