Large Ceremonial Horse Carved From Wood And Painted In Multiple Colors – India, Probably Rajasthan Spectacul

Spectacular large horse carved from wood, painted, and decorated in multiple colors, richly adorned with its harness and tack.

This imposing sculpture depicts a parade horse shown at a walk, rendered in a deliberately powerful and stylized manner. The body, head, and limbs are entirely carved, while the saddle, harness, and ornaments are enhanced by remarkable polychrome decoration in shades of vermilion red, green, brown, black, and ochre.

The head, which is particularly expressive, is adorned with harnesses carved in relief, while the mane and long tail are rendered with broad striations that lend the entire piece a sense of movement. The flank features abundant geometric and plant motifs, with intricate relief work evoking the rich ornamentation of ceremonial horses.

In terms of its iconography and decorative treatment, this sculpture can be linked to the tradition of parade horses and popular equestrian sculptures from Rajasthan, where the horse occupies an important place in carved and painted crafts.
