Large Double-light Hanging Lantern, Russia, Early 19th Century
Large Russian double-light hanging lantern, representative of ceremonial interior lighting from the early 19th century. The design centers on a cylindrical body of clear, colorless glass, set within a gilded bronze frame that forms the main decorative band. The glass cylinder is secured within a metal hoop and suspended by four chains from the upper element, emphasizing the strict verticality and monumental character of the form.
The lantern is equipped with two bronze candle holders, attesting to its original use during the era of candlelight. A central vertical metal rod runs through the entire structure, connecting the upper suspension to the lower section and ensuring stability and visual coherence.
The upper section is topped by a glass dome mounted in a metal frame, ending in a hook for suspending it from the ceiling. Curved metal arms extend from the dome, adorned with teardrop-shaped crystal pendants that create a sparkling effect.
The outer rim is embellished with bronze arms decorated with crystal pendants and star-shaped glass elements. The decorative bands feature a relief design enhanced with gilding. The lower section is closed off by a glass base, centered by a circular decorative element that serves as the terminus of the vertical stem.
The piece combines the precision of classical forms with refined decorative richness, characteristic of palatial and aristocratic interiors from the first half of the 19th century.
