Impressive Russian Empire-style Chandelier, First Quarter Of The 19th Century
An imposing Empire-style chandelier, characteristic of the ceremonial interiors of the era of Alexander I. The design is based on a rare spherical concept, reflecting the architectural rigor and symbolic program of the Russian Imperial style. The central body takes the form of a deep blue sphere adorned with gilded bronze stars in relief, evoking the celestial vault.
The sphere is encircled by a wide gilded bronze band featuring finely chiseled relief decoration. Nine arms arranged in a circle take the form of majestic swans with outstretched wings. The modeling of the birds is distinguished by the precision of the feather detailing and an expressive symmetry characteristic of the finest examples of the Russian Empire style. Each swan supports a circular lampshade, forming a harmonious crown around the central body.
The chandelier is suspended by heavy chains connected to a rosette richly adorned with palmettes and pine-cone-shaped pendants. The lower section ends with a pendant in the shape of a stylized pinecone, a traditional symbol of abundance in the decorative arts of the early 19th century. Electrified while retaining its historic silhouette.
