Writing Desk With Marquetry And Gilded Bronze Fittings, France, Late 19th Century
An elegant parlor desk made in France in the late 19th century, designed in the neoclassical tradition with an explicit reference to the aesthetics of the Louis XVI style. The body is crafted from precious wood, veneered with carefully selected veneers and richly adorned with refined marquetry. The rectangular top, with slightly rounded corners, features a central allegorical composition depicting the attributes of the arts and sciences, executed in polychrome marquetry and framed by an elaborate ornamental border.
The outline of the tabletop is highlighted by a finely chased gilded bronze molding. The band is decorated with floral marquetry and embellished with gilded bronze pieces at the corners. The front features a drawer fitted with a gilded bronze handle. The interior is divided into compartments for writing accessories. The opening top reveals an additional work surface with a mirror attached to the inner side.
The turned and fluted legs are adorned with gilded bronze elements and finished with feet. They are connected by curved crossbars converging on a central decorative element shaped like a vase, resting on a contrasting base. The piece is distinguished by its harmonious proportions, high-quality craftsmanship, and the rich decoration typical of the period.
