Russian Silver Mug With Cloisonné Enamel, In The Neo-russian Style. Russia, Early 20th Century
An elegant Russian silver tankard with a hinged lid, crafted in the Neo-Russian style and richly decorated with polychrome cloisonné enamels on filigree. The cylindrical body is decorated with a complex ornamental composition inspired by the floral and geometric motifs of ancient Russian art. The enamels, in a vibrant palette of cobalt blue, turquoise, white, and green, contrast harmoniously with the gilded silver surface. The lid is adorned in the center with a polychrome rosette executed in the same technique. The elegantly curved handle blends perfectly with the silhouette of the piece and highlights its sculptural quality. Similar pieces were produced by Moscow’s most prestigious silversmith workshops in the early 20th century, carrying on the traditions of the Neo-Russian style inspired by 17th-century silversmithing and the masterpieces of the Muscovite masters. This tankard is a remarkable example of Russian artistic goldsmithing from the late Historicist period.
