Franz Bergman. Viennese Bronze Trinket Tray Featuring An Elephant And Its Maindain.

An elegant desk tray crafted by the renowned Viennese foundry of Franz Bergman (1861–1936) in the 1920s and 1930s. This piece elegantly combines practical function with remarkable sculptural quality, characteristic of the finest Viennese bronze works from the first third of the 20th century.

The figure of the rearing elephant, carrying its mahout, is cast in finely patinated bronze and displays exceptional modeling. The artist masterfully captures the tension of the movement, the animal’s powerful musculature, the folds of its skin, and the details of the harness, lending the entire piece a remarkable sense of vitality. The composition is complemented by a circular bowl made of polished cherry marble, carved with a shallow recess designed to hold business cards, correspondence, jewelry, or other small precious objects.

The originality of this creation also lies in its ingenious functionality. The elephant’s raised trunk and tusks allow rings, key chains, or sets of keys to be hung from them, making this sculpture an elegant desk accessory. This blend of decorative sculpture and utilitarian object perfectly reflects the spirit of Art Deco, a period during which Viennese artists sought a harmonious union between aesthetic beauty and everyday use.

The works produced by Franz Bergman’s studio were particularly prized for the excellence of their casting, the finesse of their hand-chiseled details, and the richness of their patina. Today, these decorative compositions rank among the most sought-after examples of Viennese bronze on the international art and antiques market.
