Bronze Sculpture - “le Dépit Amoureux” - J. Osbach - France - 19th Century
Bronze group sculpture signed by Joseph Osbach – Molière’s “Le Dépit amoureux”
An important bronze group sculpture with a brown patina, depicting an elegant couple in period costumes in a composition full of charm and character. The figures, dressed in 17th-century fashion, are distinguished by the delicacy of their features, the expressiveness of their faces, and the rich detail of their clothing: pleated ruffs, buttoned doublets, fabrics with delicately worked folds, and carefully modeled accessories.
The group rests on a circular pedestal with textured decoration, supported by a molded base. A brass plaque bears the inscription: “…shall we break up or shall we not? Act IV of *The Love-Sick*—Molière,” a reference to Molière’s famous comedy.
The work is signed on the pedestal “J. Osbach,” for Joseph Osbach, a sculptor known for his figurative bronze compositions.
The quality of the casting, the beautiful patina with its nuanced highlights, and the attention to detail give this piece a remarkable decorative presence. A sculpture with character, ideal for a collection of antique bronzes or a refined interior.
