Napoleon III-style Ladies' Daybed. France, Second Half Of The 19th Century
An elegant ladies’ daybed, made in France during the second half of the 19th century in the Napoleon III style, constituting a remarkable example of artistic cabinetmaking from the historicist period. This piece combines decorative refinement, high-quality craftsmanship, and carefully considered functionality—characteristics of the finest Parisian productions of the era.
The cabinet is distinguished by its particularly expressive proportions. The tall superstructure accentuates its visual presence and creates an intimate architectural space around the piece, making the daybed the focal point of a woman’s boudoir. The composition creates an impression that is both solemn and welcoming, combining the rigor of classical architecture with the decorative richness characteristic of the Second Empire.
The wooden frame is richly adorned with marquetry in contrasting woods. The writing surface features a finely inlaid design depicting musical instruments, Cupid’s quiver and arrows, the torch of love, floral garlands, and ribbons—traditional symbols of affection, harmony, and domestic happiness. These allegorical motifs underscore the piece’s original purpose in a refined feminine interior.
The superstructure is adorned with two oval porcelain medallions in the style of the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory. One follows the traditional style of a portrait of the Dauphin Louis XVII, while the second likely depicts Marie-Thérèse de France, known as Madame Royale. Both portraits are set within delicate gilded bronze frames, decorated with ribbons, garlands of flowers, and laurel motifs characteristic of French decorative arts during the reign of Napoleon III.
The piece rests on slender, tapered, fluted legs, embellished with delicate gilded bronze appliqués. Of particular note are the small bronze elements set within the fluting—a detail of rare finesse that reveals the manufacturer’s high level of technical skill. The waistband is adorned with gilded bronze mounts featuring classical garlands and a central mask. The lower crossbar is centered by a decorative gilded bronze vase, which completes the balance of the piece’s architectural silhouette.
The interior features a central mirror, open shelves, a sliding writing tray, and several compartments for writing accessories and personal items. The original key is included.
