Russian Silver Kovch With Polychrome Cloisonné Enamel. Manufactured By P. A. Ovtchinnikov. Moscow.
A magnificent Russian silver kovch crafted by the renowned workshop of Pavel Akimovich Ovchinnikov in Moscow during the last quarter of the 19th century, this piece is a remarkable example of Russian silversmithing from the Historicist period. Crafted from 84-zolotnik silver with a vermeil interior, it is sumptuously adorned with an exceptional polychrome cloisonné enamel design, illustrating the virtuosity of the Moscow master enamelers.
The body, with a traditional shape inspired by ancient Russian kovchs, is entirely covered with a deep, dark enamel background against which an elegant floral composition unfolds. Large stylized flowers, sinuous stems, and delicate foliage are rendered in a rich palette of blues, turquoises, greens, reds, whites, and golden hues. The predominant blue hue lends the piece remarkable freshness and decorative elegance, while the entirely gilded interior creates a refined contrast that highlights the brilliance of the enamels.
The finesse of the cloisonné enamel, the chromatic harmony, and the impeccable quality of the craftsmanship are characteristic of the finest works produced by the P. A. Ovtchinnikov workshop, considered one of the most important artistic goldsmithing workshops in Imperial Russia during the second half of the 19th century. Thanks to its remarkable artistic quality, authentic hallmarks, and excellent state of preservation, this kovch is of great interest to both museum collections and connoisseurs of Russian enameled silverware.
