Mirror With Carved Garlands And A Bow, Wood And Gilded Stucco, Circa 1860

Large mirror with carved garlands and a bow, wood and gilded stucco, circa 1860

A superb French mirror from the second half of the 19th century, circa 1860, made of wood and gilded stucco, notable for the elegance of its carved decoration and the richness of its frame.

With a beautiful architectural presence, this mirror is distinguished by its stepped frame, composed of several successive moldings, alternating between gadrooned profiles and molded strips. This three-layered construction lends the piece a particularly appealing depth and relief, while emphasizing the verticality of the composition.

The upper section is adorned with a magnificent carved ribbon bow, from which delicate garlands of flowers and foliage bloom, rendered in relief with great finesse. Long plant tendrils cascade down the side panels, while the lower corners are accented by carved floral and foliage motifs. Together, these elements create a rich, harmonious, and refined design, characteristic of the decorative style of the Second Empire.

The gilding has a warm patina, with subtle nuances developed over time, which highlights the reliefs and gives the mirror a particularly luminous presence. The back consists of a oak paneling, a traditional structural detail that adds to the appeal of this beautiful antique piece.

The mirror shows signs of use entirely consistent with its era but is in very good overall condition for a piece of this age. The patina and the marks of time contribute to its authenticity and charm.

With its generous dimensions, rich ornamentation, and high-quality decoration, this mirror will naturally find its place above a fireplace, in an entryway, or in a reception room. It will bring depth, light, and elegance to both a classic interior and a more contemporary setting.
