"Louis XVI Style Side Table"
Charming small lady's writing desk in the Louis XVI style, Napoleon III period – circa 1880–1900. This lovely small lady's writing desk, veneered in symmetrical decoration, was made at the end of the 19th century during the Napoleon III period, in the style of and as a faithful copy of Louis XVI style desks. This type of furniture, both elegant and functional, belongs to the grand tradition of women's writing desks and parlor furniture intended for writing and correspondence. The rectangular top is veneered with fine woods arranged symmetrically, forming a simple and refined design, highlighted by a geometric marquetry frieze running along the edge. The whole rests on four tapered legs, typical of the Louis XVI style, adorned with finely chased gilt bronze mounts and rings. The frieze opens with a side drawer, fitted with its bronze keyhole escutcheon and key; the compartmentalized interior testifies to careful use. The harmonious proportions and delicate lines give this desk a light and elegant appearance, ideal for a classic or bourgeois interior. This piece perfectly illustrates the historicist taste of the late 19th century, a period during which French workshops excelled in reproducing 18th-century designs with high-quality craftsmanship and fine materials.
