Nevers Earthenware – Revolutionary Design

A very pretty Nevers earthenware plate with polychrome decoration, charmingly recreating one of the major iconographic themes of Nevers earthenware inspired by the French Revolution.

At the center of the composition are several symbolic attributes gathered around the royal crown, including a shovel or spade and a rake, tools associated with labor and the land. These tools are traditionally used in revolutionary iconography to represent the Third Estate, while the crown evokes the monarchy. The Nièvre-style compositions of this family frequently combine these attributes with the crozier and the sword, representing the clergy and the nobility, respectively, in the famous theme of the meeting of the Three Estates.

The design is particularly appealing for its naive and spontaneous freshness, with a palette of blue, green, orange-yellow, and purple. The rim is enlivened by small stylized plant motifs and geometric patterns that delicately punctuate the plate’s edge.

This iconography belongs to one of the most interesting groups within Nevers’s production: the so-called “revolutionary” or “patriotic” earthenware pieces, which transform the political events of the late 18th century into veritable objects of popular propaganda. The theme of the three estates and their attributes is particularly well documented in the collections of the Musée de la Faïence de Nevers and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims.

Our example, dating from the 19th century, draws on this visual vocabulary with a particularly decorative interpretation. It thus serves as a lovely testament to the enduring presence of revolutionary imagery in Nevers earthenware, long after the events of 1789.
